Nutella Stuffed Chocolate Orange Muffins – Deliciously moist orange infused muffins stuffed with Nutella and chocolate chips, and topped with orange flavoured icing, orange zest and more chocolate chips!
You should all know by now my love for the chocolate and orange flavour combination, so today I bring you Nutella Stuffed Chocolate Orange Muffins!
Nutella Stuffed Chocolate Orange Muffins
These muffins are so moist from the buttermilk and vegetable oil used. I love using buttermilk and oil instead of butter in my baked goods, especially muffins and bread. I infused the muffins with a little orange juice and zest, and stuffed them full of Nutella and chocolate chips.
Finally, I topped them off with orange flavoured icing, and a little more zest and chocolate chips. Perfection!
Such a quick and easy recipe! All you need to do is whisk together the dry ingredients, and in a separate bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients. Combine the two together, pour the mixture into a 12-hole muffin pan, filling only half way. Scoop a little Nutella into each one, and top with the rest of the muffin mixture.
Bake for 15 – 17 minutes. Once cooled, top with the icing (simply whisk together the icing sugar and orange juice), zest and chocolate chips. Done!

Nutella Stuffed Chocolate Orange Muffins
Deliciously moist orange infused muffins stuffed with Nutella and chocolate chips, and topped with orange flavoured icing, orange zest and more chocolate chips!
Ingredients
For the Muffins
- 3 cups plain flour, 375g
- 3/4 cup caster sugar, 170g
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup chocolate chips, 175g
- Zest of one large orange
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup orange juice, 60ml
- 1 cup buttermilk, 240ml
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil, 100ml
- 12 teaspoons Nutella
For the Icing
- 2 cups icing sugar, 125g
- 1 - 2 teaspoons orange juice
- Orange zest, to garnish
Instructions
For the Muffins
- Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Line a 12-hole muffin pan with muffin cases, then set aside.
- Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, chocolate chips, and zest. Set aside.
- Whisk together the egg, orange juice, buttermilk, and oil. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, and mix until just combined. Do not over-mix.
- Divide the batter evenly between the 12 muffin cases, filling only half way. Place a teaspoon of Nutella into the centre of each muffin, then cover with the remaining muffin batter.
- Bake for 15 - 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted just off-centre (to avoid Nutella) comes out clean.
- Allow to cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
For the Icing
- Whisk together the icing sugar, and 1 - 2 tablespoons of orange juice. Add a little water if the icing is too thick.
- Drizzle the icing on top of the cooled muffins, and garnish with orange zest and chocolate chips.
Notes
TIP: You can freeze the teaspoons of Nutella for 1 hour on a baking tray lined with parchment paper before placing them in the muffin batter. This helps prevent the Nutella sinking to the bottom of the muffins.
Muffins stay fresh in an air-tight container at room temperature or in the fridge for up to 5 days. They also freeze well for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge.
